This Month in History (February)

by: Aryssa Mansfield

February 1st, 1895- Grapes of Wrath director John Ford was born. He did not direct the Grapes of Pride, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, Greed, or Envy.

February 4th, 1938- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released. I don’t know if I am Happy or Grumpy about this.

February 6th, 1895- “Babe” Ruth was born, and he was going, going, gone!

February 6th, 1911- Ronald Regan the 40th president of the United States was born. No wonder we elected an actor; he had to look good on television.

February 7th, 1812- Charles Dickens was born. Plot Twist, his real name is Oliver.

February 11th, 1847- Thomas Edison was born. He had over 1200 bright ideas.

February 11th, 2010- The United States tested an airborne laser weapon. I bet that took some Real Genius.

February 12th, 1809- Naturalist Charles Darwin was born. That last name used to be Darlose but it evolved into something more successful.

February 14th, 1929- The Saint Valentine’s Day massacre occurred- that should teach happy couples to be in love.

February 17th, 1909- Apache chief Geronimo died after escaping and being recaptured by American forces. What does he yell when he does a cannon ball?

February 28th, 1953- Watson and Crick discover the structure of DNA. Way to climb the ladder of discovery.

 Hunger Games Makeup

After watching any part of the up and coming film series hunger games you will be inspired by the vibrant colors in the world of the Capitol; so it follows that a popular trend in the fashion world is Hunger Games inspired make up. The colors of red, orange and yellow, which used to be considered outlandish choices for eye shadow or lip colors, are now present in every day makeup as they are reminiscent of Katniss Everdeen “the girl on fire”. Bright and striking pink lip colors are also popular because of the lovable, dotting and slightly off chaperone Effie Trinket. Another makeup style that has really caught fire in recent months is long eyelashes, which have always been desirable but are now reaching astonishing lengths thanks to the residents of the Capitol (and Maybelline). Do not be afraid to sport these flashy new trends and may the colors be ever in your favor.

Marching Into History

by: Aryssa Mansfield

This Month in History is a hopefully amusing take on historical events in any given month. This edition is for the month of March.

March 1st, 1974- Seven people were found to be connected to Nixon’s famous Watergate scandal. They were not, however connected to the Airgate, Earthgate or Firegate scandals.

March 3rd, 1847- Alexander Graham Bell was born. *Ring Ring, is that a telephone or a bell?

March 5th, 1946- Winston Churchill gave The Iron curtain speech. This is not to be confused with the steel curtain speech given by Chuck Noll.

March 6th, 1836- Fort Alamo fell to Mexican troops, which inspired a battle cry for Texans but I just cannot remember what it was.

March 12th, 1912- Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts, I wonder if they would let me tag along.

March 12th, 1938- Nazis invaded Austria. They Von-Trapped the Austrians into the Third Reich.

March 13th, 1930- Pluto was discovered. I hope he found Mickey soon after, I wouldn’t want him to get lost.

March 16th, 1830- Nathanial Hawthorn published The Scarlet Letter. My teacher gave me a scarlet letter on my research paper on that book, and it was not an A.

March 18th, 1584- Ivan IV of Russia died. How terrible.

March 24th, 1958- Elvis Presley joined the army. Thank you, Thank you very much for your service.

March 26th, 2000- Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia. I wonder how many votes were put-in for him.

What is IB?

IB or International Baccalaureate is a program held at Ridgeview High School in which students prepare for college level courses, and has participating schools all over the world (the international part of International Baccalaureate). A student in the IB program has the opportunity to earn almost a complete Associates degree before they are done with high school, depending on how the college they go to treats AP (advanced placement) and IB credit. While IB is just for juniors and seniors our school has a Pre-IB or PIB Program to help prepare for the rigorous work ahead. You may have heard a senior say that they leave school early for IB; they do in fact get an early release date in order to study for the IB exams which determine whether or not they get their IB diploma. The IB program is considered very rigorous and many people enrolled in the program will joke about not having a life. When asked if he had a life outside of IB, Tyler Carrol, a PIB sophomore said “I don’t have a life period.” Other people responded that they do have a life outside of IB but it is difficult to balance at times. Jack Wilson, another sophomore said it’s not difficult to balance “if you use your planner.” while Michael Bueme, yet another sophomore, immediately said “yes” it is difficult to balance life and IB. When people in the IB program hear the term IB some people think of “pain” like Krystal Siler an IB junior, or “homework” like PIB freshman Sydney Stenson. Other people think of the rewards like 10th grade PIB student (I promise the last sophomore) Matt Blackwell who thinks of “a lot of work; challenging but rewarding.” International Baccalaureate is a fast paced and advanced way to go through high school that generally has a positive impact on a student’s future.
